At Smartsupp, we build a multichannel communication platform for online stores. Live chat, email, Messenger and WhatsApp in a single inbox, plus chatbots and Mira, our AI shopping assistant. We were founded in Brno in 2013, and today more than 100,000 websites around the world use us. Every month we serve hundreds of millions of visitors, and three quarters of our revenue comes from abroad.
We keep developing the platform, and we're looking for a hands-on Tech Lead to take over its technical direction. Architecture, quality, technical roadmap, mentoring. And still close to the code.
What will your role be?
You'll be the technical partner to our CEO, who has a software development background and currently leads engineering directly. You'll take ownership of architecture and technical standards, and together with him and the product team, you'll decide which technical direction we take. You'll also have partners for technical topics outside Smartsupp: with the Group CTO and the tech leads of the other ABUGO companies, we discuss architecture, AI workflows and operational experience, and share know-how, tooling and common standards.
Our development team has 10 people, split into the Core team (multichannel communication, inbox, integrations, dashboard, widget) and the AI team (Mira). We look for solutions together. Your role is to lay out the options, guide the team to a decision and stand behind it. You'll lead technical discussions, mentor others and dive into the more complex problems in the code yourself.
What will you be responsible for?
- Platform architecture. Dozens of microservices, real-time communication, integrations with e-commerce platforms and messaging channels. You'll decide where the system should grow, where it should be simplified and how to keep it understandable for the team.
- Technical roadmap. You'll translate the state of the system and technical debt into a concrete backlog with clearly named trade-offs. You'll agree on priorities with the CEO and the product team.
- Quality and testing strategy. You'll define how we verify changes across services and what must be tested before deployment. Bugs can happen, but we need to find out about them before the customer does.
- Working with AI in the team. You'll define what an agent is allowed to do, how we verify its output and where AI genuinely helps us deliver more good work.
- Technical leadership and mentoring. You'll lead backend and frontend syncs as well as technical reviews. You'll help colleagues grow and take on more responsibility.
- Collaboration with product. You'll be involved in finding solutions from the moment a product problem emerges, not just once the requirements are finalized.
What technical challenges do we tackle?
- Real-time chat and messaging for more than 100,000 websites and hundreds of millions of visitors a month.
- Changes across dozens of microservices. Contract tests, integration tests with Testcontainers, e2e tests for critical scenarios, observability.
- Mira AI. Product catalogs, RAG and evaluating answer quality while keeping costs and latency in check.
- Integrations. Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento and Shoptet, plus email, Messenger and WhatsApp.
- Issue traceability. Logging and monitoring that let us find out within minutes what happened to a specific customer.
- Development with AI agents. How to design the codebase and workflows so that both people and agents can work in them effectively.
What do we work with?
- Backend: Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS
- Frontend: React, Svelte, TypeScript
- Data: PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Elasticsearch
- Infra: AWS in the EU region, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, Grafana, Mezmo
- Testing and quality: Jest, Playwright, CodeRabbit and GitHub Copilot reviews on every PR
- AI in the product: LLM APIs from OpenAI and other providers in Mira AI
- AI in development: Claude Code, custom skills and MCP integrations, a pilot of remote agents for investigating issues
- Collaboration: GitHub, Linear, Slack
We don't expect you to know every technology. What matters more is a strong foundation in Node.js / TypeScript and experience designing and running systems made up of multiple services.
Who are we looking for?
Someone who has already made technical decisions and wants to take ownership of the entire platform.
We'll get along well if you:
- have 6+ years of backend experience, a significant part of it in Node.js / TypeScript,
- have designed systems made up of multiple services and understand how they run in production, not just the code,
- have experience in technical leadership, whether or not you've held the tech lead title,
- can explain trade-offs, listen to the team and bring a discussion to a decision,
- treat tests, reviews and observability as standard,
- can tell when another abstraction, service or tool no longer adds value,
- give and receive specific feedback and can handle a difficult conversation,
- use AI tools daily and understand what you're shipping to production.
Experience in any of these areas is a big plus:
- SaaS with a large number of smaller customers, PLG or freemium,
- real-time systems, messaging or e-commerce integrations,
- LLMs in a product or rolling out AI tools in team development,
- AWS and Kubernetes in production,
- security and compliance, such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2.
You don't have to tick every box. If you have a strong foundation and have already dealt with some of these things, we'd love to talk.
What do you get in return?
- Room to shape the architecture, the technical roadmap and the way we build software
- Shared know-how across the group's six companies
- 25 days of vacation, 2 sick days
- Remote work or work from the ABUGO offices in the center of Brno (winner of the IT Offices category, 2026)
- Education budget
- Language lessons
- MultiSport card
- Dog-friendly offices
- Company events, offsites and team-building
